List Queries by Person

I have list queries on one of my forms to which I would like to pass the value of a person column in the current list item to filter on a person column in the sub-list. This value is loaded into a control but I cannot get the list queries to filter based on it. I have tried the control in {} alone, and in {value:} format.

I am currently faking the effect I want by having a view that does the person filtering for me. But that is awkward in other use cases for this form.

Any hints on how I can successfully grab a person value to filter a list query?
